Why the Industry Needs OpenAR Collective
After fifty years in banking and collections, through mainframes, dialers, analytics, and now AI, one truth has never changed: the biggest barrier to progress in collections isn’t talent it’s cost. Small agencies, credit unions, and healthcare billing teams have always had smart ideas. What they haven’t had is the budget to build modern scoring, compliance workflows, or contact strategies. OpenAR Collective exists to close that gap.
Why This Matters
The OpenAR Collective, OpenAR Collective, is building a free, nonprofit, open-source AR and collections platform. No license fees, no vendor lock-in, no per-seat pricing. The code is open, the roadmap is community-driven, and the goal is simple: give every organization a modern platform, not just those with seven-figure IT budgets.
I’ve seen the technology gap from both sides when I was running large collection operations and in my consulting through Collection Intelligence. Repeatedly, good operators fall behind not because they lack skill, but because they lack access. An open platform built and maintained by its users is one of the few models that can level the field.
Benefits of a Collective Platform
- Shared cost, shared innovation: Hundreds of agencies contributing code and compliance updates means faster progress for everyone.
- Transparency: Open-source code can be audited by regulators, compliance teams, and security experts.
- No vendor lock-in: Your roadmap belongs to you, not a provider.
- Faster compliance updates: Community patches for FDCPA, Reg F, and state rules reduce cost and delay.
- Access for smaller players: Nonprofits, credit unions, and regional agencies finally get enterprise-grade infrastructure.
Risks to Consider
- Open-source in a regulated industry requires discipline:
- Strong security and encryption standards
- Clear compliance ownership for each deployment
- Sustained community engagement
- Governance to prevent fragmentation
- Internal expertise to configure and maintain the platform
A Foundation for the Future
I’ve watched “the next big thing” come and go, usually helping only the organizations that could afford it. OpenAR Collective is different. It’s built for the agencies, credit unions, and billing departments that have never had a seat at that table. It’s not a silver bullet and still requires real compliance, real security, and real operational commitment. But as a foundation, it’s free, transparent, and community-built. It’s the most promising development I’ve seen in decades.
